What changes the price of plumbing work in Tulsa

How the plumber bills

Some plumbers charge by the hour plus a service call fee; others quote a flat price for common jobs such as a drain clearing or a water heater swap. Neither is better by default. What matters is that the quote is in writing and says what it includes.

Timing

Nights, weekends and holidays cost more. Many Tulsa plumbers offer after-hours service, usually at a higher rate. If you can shut off the main water valve and wait, a daytime visit is usually cheaper.

Access and the age of the home

A leak under a slab, a drain line with no cleanout or pipes in a tight crawlspace take longer to reach. Age matters too: according to the ACS 2024 5-year estimates, the median Tulsa home was built in 1973 and 64.9% were built before 1980. Older homes may still have original drain and supply lines, which a plumber can check with a camera inspection before quoting a bigger repair.

Repair versus replacement

Slab leaks show the spread clearly. A spot repair can land near the low end of $500–$5,000, while rerouting the line can run $3,900–$7,500. Sewer work is similar: cleaning a main line runs $175–$800, but replacement is priced by the foot. Ask each plumber to explain why they recommend one approach over the other.

Permits

Tulsa's plumbing permit form lists water heater, slab leak, reroute piping, gas piping, backflow assembly, water service and building waste line, and only a licensed tradesperson may apply for trade permits. A quote for any of those jobs should say whether the permit is included. Suburbs have their own permit offices; see our pages for Broken Arrow, Owasso, Bixby and Jenks. This is general information, not legal advice.

Water heaters and hard water

The Department of Energy puts tank water heater life at 10–15 years and tankless at about 20, and notes that scale shortens tankless life. Tulsa's water page says hard water raises water-heating costs and wears heating elements. For Jewell-plant areas, Bixby's FAQ gives an average of 8.2 grains per gallon (140 ppm). An older unit near the end of its life may not be worth a $150–$700 repair; our guide on whether to repair or replace a water heater covers the trade-off.

How to compare plumbing quotes

  • Same scope. Make sure each quote covers the same work, parts and fixture or tank size.
  • What is included. Permit, disposal of the old unit, haul-away and patching are often extras.
  • License number on the bid. Oklahoma rules require the contractor's license number on bids and contracts.
  • Who pulls the permit. In Tulsa only a licensed tradesperson can.

Before you sign, run through the hiring checklist:

  • Ask for the contractor's Oklahoma plumbing contractor license number. Oklahoma rules require it on contractors' ads, bids and contracts, with “OK” in front of it on both sides of work vehicles (OAC 158:30-5-3).
  • Look it up on the Construction Industries Board's “Are They Licensed?” page.
  • Ask whether they are registered with your city (Tulsa, Broken Arrow, Owasso…). 59 O.S. §1020 requires it. Ask, too, whether they will pull the permit.
  • Get the price in writing before work starts.
  • Smell gas? Leave the house first, then call 911 and Oklahoma Natural Gas at 800-458-4251.

Plumbing cost questions

How much does a plumber charge per hour in Tulsa?

Thumbtack lists Tulsa plumbers at about $45–$165 an hour, and national cost guides put typical rates at $45–$150. Many plumbers add a $50–$200 service call or trip fee that often covers the first hour, and some price common jobs at a flat rate instead. Ask each plumber which way they bill before they start, and get the total in writing.

How much does it cost to replace a water heater in Tulsa?

Published cost guides put a 40–50 gallon tank water heater at $600–$3,100 installed and a tankless unit at $1,400–$5,600 installed. In Tulsa a water heater replacement is permitted work, so the permit fee and old-unit disposal may be billed separately. Ask whether the quote includes the permit, haul-away and any code updates such as an expansion tank.

How much does sewer line replacement cost?

Cost guides put sewer line replacement at about $50–$250 per foot, or roughly $2,000–$10,000 for a 40-foot run. Depth, access, the replacement method and whether the yard or driveway must be opened all change the price. A sewer camera inspection, typically $125–$500, usually comes first so the plumber can see where and how badly the line has failed.

Does an emergency plumber cost more?

Usually. Published guides put emergency or after-hours plumbing at about $100–$350 an hour, or a $150–$250 after-hours fee on top of the normal price. Many Tulsa plumbers offer after-hours service, usually at a higher rate. If the problem can safely wait until morning, for example after you shut off the main water valve, a daytime visit may cost less.

Are the prices on this page quotes from Tulsa Plumbing Pros?

No. They are typical ranges from published cost guides (2025–2026), shown so you have a sense of scale before you talk to a plumber. Tulsa Plumbing Pros does not set, offer or bid any price. The independent plumber you choose looks at the job and gives you a written quote, which is the only number that counts.
